The 30 Year Quest To Tame The 'Wily' Cancer Gene

Michael Robertson was on his summer vacation a few years ago and had just proposed to the woman who would become his wife when he decided he needed to see a doctor. "I'd been having symptoms for a few months but it was during an intense work period, drinking too much coffee, not getting enough sleep, so I kind of chalked it up to that," Robertson says. Unfortunately, the doctor had a more dire diagnosis: stage 4 rectal cancer. Robertson was only 35 at the time — unusually young for this...

San Jose, CA – A federal judge has blocked the Monterey County General Plan Initiative from going on the June ballot. A Thursday ruling from U-S District Court Judge James Ware in San Jose says the initiative violated the federal Voting Rights Act, which requires that county voters receive all election materials in English and Spanish. Signature gatherers only circulated the text of the initiative in English. KAZU's Ben Adler talks with Salinas Californian reporter Dawn Withers.

Salinas, CA – When Salinas voters passed the half-cent sales tax known as Measure V at last November's election, most assumed the city's budget crisis was solved. But while the city's libraries are likely safe, they still have to compete with other departments - including police, fire and parks and recreation - for a limited amount of new revenue. As KAZU's Ben Adler reports, that set off a funding battle among the departments at two recent city council meetings, including one earlier this week.

Salinas, CA – The Monterey County Board of Supervisors expected to get sued when it voted to keep the General Plan initiative off the June primary ballot last week. And it only took initiative supporters a day to file that suit against the county, saying the Board's vote clearly violated the law. The stakes are high - the proposal would set land use policy throughout the county for the next 20 years. But the battle has moved from the initiative's merits straight into the courts.

Pacific Grove, CA – You've heard her voice for years on NPR, reporting from London and across the Middle East - Baghdad, Jerusalem, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, to name just a few places. In fact, NPR foreign correspondant Deborah Amos only spends about a hundred days at home each year. The rest of the time she's on the road.

Salinas, Calif. – Many Monterey County residents are still furious two days after the Board of Supervisors voted to not place the General Plan initiative on the June primary ballot. One of the initiative's leading backers, LandWatch Monterey County, has already filed suit, saying supervisors broke the law by not putting the measure on the ballot. So what legal ground is the county standing on? KAZU's Ben Adler talks with Monterey County counsel Charles McKee to find out.

Salinas, CA – The fierce battle over future Monterey County land use took a major twist Tuesday night. The Board of Supervisors voted 3-to-2 to not place the proposed General Plan initiative on the June ballot. Initiative supporters had gathered about 15-thousand signatures through the referendum process, and supervisors appeared to only have two choices - adopt the initiative as law, or let the entire county vote. Instead, they did neither. KAZU's Ben Adler reports.

Monterey, CA – It's not the Tour de France, but organizers of the Amgen Tour of California hope to start a cycling tradition with this week's inaugural bike race down the California coast. Today's 4th stage, 130 miles from Monterey to San Luis Obispo, brought a major international cycling race to the Monterey Peninsula for the first time. KAZU's Ben Adler reports.

Pebble Beach, CA – Most golf fans know by now that San Jose State grad Arron Oberholser won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am yesterday by five strokes. But off the golf course, the news was as good as the weather.

KAZU's Ben Adler talks with Ollie Nutt, tournament director and vice president of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.
