Event Description

Mt. Banner at Dawn

Famed Mountaineer and Search & Rescue Legend Speaks at Marina’s REI Dean Rosnau, author of The Shortest Straw: Search and Rescue in the High Sierra, will thrill and inspire attendees with stories of rescue and recovery. Rock climber, mountaineer, home builder and now author of The Shortest Straw (http://www.TheShortestStraw.net), Dean Rosnau relates lessons learned, adventures had and lives lost and saved from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27th at the REI store at 145 General Stillwell Drive in Marina. Though his talk emphasizes safety and preparedness in the high-mountain environment, Rosnau, who moved to the eastern Sierra Nevada to build homes and lodges in 1989, volunteered with Search and Rescue (SAR) with the aim to use his God-given talents and mountaineering skills to make an impact on other people’s lives. “Each of us needs to find out what makes us unique and contribute that gift back to others,” says Rosnau. “Do something every day that makes someone else’s life extraordinary.” And Rosnau’s adventures in the mountains have been extraordinary. From leading a climbing group of hypothermic men down, anchor by anchor, off Yosemite’s Lost Arrow Spire in a freezing storm to nearly dying in the middle of a raging Walker River flood event to save a young family, The Shortest Straw is a page-turner. Thanks mainly to the fact that Rosnau has journaled daily since junior high school and SAR sheriff reports were written after every SAR event, The Shortest Straw is jam-packed with harrowing details of life and death in the high Sierra. Rosnau also makes a point of recognizing the courageous helicopter crews who regularly saved his and many other lives, sometimes in dangerous weather conditions and often in the simple danger of flying a “helo” at high altitude in hot weather with very little air pressure to keep the machine in the air. “Not only do these men and women protect us from foreign threats,” writes Rosnau, “their unwavering courage saves countless lives within our borders every day.”
