Event Description

Alma deBretteville Spreckels

The Western Stage presents "Alma" as part of its SpringFEST 2018 offerings. An original work written by Harvey Landa and performed by the LegacyPlayers (TWS's veteran actors), “Alma” chronicles the adventures of Alma deBrettville Spreckels, known both as “Big Alma” and “The Great Grandmother of San Francisco.” This vivid and outspoken character rose from poverty to become one of SF’s most unforgettable wealthy socialites and philanthropists, who persuaded her first husband, sugar magnate Adolph B. Spreckels, to donate the California Palace of the Legion of Honor to the city of San Francisco. You might recognize her as the model for the famous Dewey Monument in SF’s Union Square. There is much to learn about her life, her vibrancy, and her efforts to better her world. This event is wheelchair accessible. Individuals requiring sign-language interpreters, real-time captioners, or other accommodations should contact Melissa Chin-Parker at (831)770-7088 or mchin@hartnell.edu
