NewMusicWorks and Tandy Beal & Company partner for an extraordinary coupling of music and dance featuring premiere scores by seven living composers, with new choreographies by Ms. Beal.
Chamber works, songs and improvisations by seven area composers — Philip Collins, Michael McGushin, Hyo-shin Na, Cary Nichols, Stan Poplin, Matthew Schumaker, and Jon Scoville — will be performed. Scoville’s five-movement septet, Hats, will be enlivened with dances choreographed by Tandy Beal.

2- Arrangements for Improvisations by bassist Stan Poplin and electric guitarist Cary Nichols.
3 - The World, a quietly stunning new song by Michael McGushin for soprano voice, clarinet & string quartet. (world premiere)
4 - Satellites, a newly composed piece by UCSC faculty member, Matthew Schumaker; pairing the colossal virtuosity of pianist Chia-Lin Yang with pre-recorded electronic media.
5 - Domestic Counterpoint, a new octet by Philip Collins, composed in memory of Judy Foreman, NMW’s graphic artist for ten years, and Phil’s friend for longer than that. (world premiere)
6 - My Lovely Friends, Sappho’s poetry and shorebirds’ murmurations were means to honor three of Philip Collins’ lovely friends: Lou Harrison, William Colvig and Bonita John. (world premiere)
7 - Many Paradises, a shimmering new piano trio by S.F.-based, Korean-American composer, Hyo-shin Na. NMW has presented over 20 works by Na during the past 24 years.
8 - It Was Like This… a new song by Michael McGushin for soprano and piano. (world premiere)
9 - Hats: Jon Scoville’s five-movement suite of infectious jazziness, celebrating styles from the Caribbean to Harlem. Commissioned and premiered by NMW in 1997. With dances choreographed by Scoville’s wife, the one and only, Tandy Beal!
