1,000-Year-Old Viking Found Buried In His Boat

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Archaeologists announced this week they found a 1,000-year-old Viking burial site in the Scottish Highlands of Ardnamurchan. Dr. Hannah Cobb of the University of Manchester told the BBC that the intact artifacts and preservation make this one of the most important Norse graves ever excavated in Britain. The Ardnamurchan Viking, as he will now be known, was found buried in his boat, with an axe, a decorated sword, a spear, a shield, and a bronze ring pin; all of which indicated that the deceased was a high-ranking warrior.
