Evacuations Partially Lifted As Crews Make Progress on Tassajara Fire

Crews are making progress on the Tassajara Fire burning in Carmel Valley.  At 1086 acres, the fire is 30% contained.  Over the past twenty-four hours, the fire has not grown beyond its footprint, which Cal Fire’s Scott McLean says is a good sign.

“But on the flip side we can’t be complacent.  The Wragg Fire in northern California earlier this year is a prime example.  We had that fire contained.  We had that within that footprint, and unfortunately, an ember did come across that line later  and increased that acreage by 500 acres on that particular fire,” says McLean.

As of 4:00pm Monday, the evacuation orders have been lifted for all outside the fire perimeter (see picture).  That includes:

  • Cachagua Road east of Parrot Ranch Road, Trampa Canyon area (Trampa Road, Trampa Canyon ), Sky Ranch Estates Road, Gates Road, Buckeye Circle, Madrone Road.

  • Parrot Ranch Road, Laurel Springs Road, Oak Road, Buckeye Road, Tassajara Road south of the fire perimeter to Jamesburg.

  • Carmel Valley Road, from Cachagua Road to Hastings and Martin Roads.

  • Tassajara Road north of the fire perimeter to Carmel Valley Road.

Meanwhile, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office is trying to contact all the people who live within the perimeter.   Many only have land lines on record.  Residents should contact Commander William Kaye at 831-755-3718.

The fire is linked to one death and has burned at least ten homes.  CalFire sent out an assessment team Monday to determine exactly which structures have been destroyed.
