Salinas, CA – It's that elephant in the room, that 800-pound gorilla the question no one involved in all the recent E. coli outbreaks and investigations wants to hear - Can fresh produce ever really be 100 percent safe? The answer, as scientists, growers and government officials will tell you, is a flat-out no. It's an inconvenient truth, as Al Gore would say. And it's one of the biggest challenges facing California growers as they work on uniform food safety guidelines to be released early next year.
