Soberanes Fire: Unattended, Illegal Campfire Started the Blaze

Krista Almanzan
Fire investigators now say an illegal and unattended campfire caused the Soberanes Fire.

Fire investigators say an unattended, illegal campfire is the cause behind the Soberanes Fire.  It started on Friday, July 22nd around 8:45a.m. in Garrapata State Park just south of Carmel Highlands.

The park does not allow camping or campfires.   Don Jaques with the U.S. Forest Service says investigators have been working around the clock since the fire started.

"Over 150 hours looking at the area determining what the cause was, looking at all the evidence that they could find, and we are certain that the cause was an unattended campfire."

Whoever started the fire could face criminal charges. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-468-4408.
