Update: On Tuesday, March 28th State Parks opened the bypass trail to local residents, school children and people who work south of the downed bridge.  Trail users must get a pass from State Parks and sign a waiver.  The trail opens a half hour before sunrise and closes a half hour after sunset.

The Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur is still standing after efforts to tear it down Monday didn’t work.  A crane wielded a 6000 pound wrecking ball onto the bridge, but it didn’t hit with the desired strength says CalTrans Spokesman Jim Shivers.

Just one evacuation order remains in effect, and the number of firefighters on the scene has continued to go down as crews make progress on the Soberanes Fire.

Singer,  songwriter, Sharon Van Etten is known for her Indie, rock and folk style music that evokes open landscapes and lonely expanses.  She was originally scheduled to perform at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur but that was before a small fire grew into a devastating giant, the Soberanes Fire.

Tourism is Big Sur’s only industry and summer is peak season. Since the Soberanes Fire started nearly two weeks ago, businesses have stayed open, but tourist traffic has slowed to a crawl.

Fire investigators say an unattended, illegal campfire is the cause behind the Soberanes Fire.  It started on Friday, July 22nd around 8:45a.m. in Garrapata State Park just south of Carmel Highlands.

A drive down Palo Colorado road starts out still lush and green. The road  shaded by towering trees.  About three miles in, firefighters are mopping up a hillside.

The Soberanes Fire is now nearly 34,000 acres and 15% contained.  As the fire continues to grow, it’s also slowly moving to the south and the east toward the Los Padres National Forest.

The Big Sur community gathered in an outdoor amphitheater on Wednesday night.  They sat surrounded by towering trees at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.  The beautiful scenery stood in stark contrast to the destruction of the fire not so far away.
