Turning the Ocean's Plastic Into Fuel

Santa Cruz, CA – Jim Holm does not have to go far from his office in Santa Cruz's Harbor to find plastic trash in the ocean. Often he heads out on his stand-up paddle board to clean up what he can. "Cigarette wrappers, oil bottles from people that are tossing it off the side of the boat, that sort of thing," said Holm. This just scratches the surface of what Holm and his longtime friend Nick Drobac want to do about plastic trash in the ocean.

Jobs Bill Targets Unemployed Veterans

Marina, CA – This week as President Obama pushed his jobs bill he focused on a piece that would help unemployed veterans. Locally when veterans hit hard times they can turn to the Veterans Transition Center. KAZU News Director Krista Almanzan spoke with the VTC's Executive Director Ron Holland about the challenges facing local unemployed veterans.

Fort Ord Reuse Slowed to a Crawl, Part 1

Home sites sit ready for builders in Marina Heights.

Marina, CA – Fort Ord closed in 1994. Today the former Army base is a mix of the present and past. Just off highway one in Marina, a busy shopping center sits across the street from uniform rows of largely abandoned wooden Army buildings. "If the City of Marina and the developer for the Dunes on Monterey Bay Project are lucky there will be a hotel complex here," said Michael Houlemard, Executive Officer of the Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA).
