Earth Day Clean Up Targets Fishing Line

Moss Landing, CA – Friday is Earth Day. And in California Earth Day is more than just a day lightly noted on the calendar. Locally it inspires environmental action from beach clean-ups to collecting signatures for a plastic bag ban. KAZU's Krista Almanzan spoke with Rebecca Dmytryk of Wild Rescue in Moss Landing. The group is organizing a Worldwide Fishing Line Clean Up.

Local Impact of Potential Government Shutdown

Monterey, CA – If the federal government shuts down at midnight tonight, it's not entirely clear what will happen next. Local federal employees, especially those in defense, may have to show up to work on Monday to find out whether their job is considered essential.

Salinas Heads to Gang Summit

Salinas, CA – Today a delegation from Salinas will be speaking at Summit in Washington DC on Preventing Youth Violence. The city is one of six selected to develop a comprehensive plan to fight youth and gang violence. The others are Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis and San Jose. Salinas' comprehensive plan was developed by CASP, Community Alliance for Safety and Peace, a coalition of government and community groups. KAZU's Krista Almanzan spoke with Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue about the plan.

School Goes 100% iPad

Monterey, CA – Monterey College of Law is going 100% iPad. Every student has one and soon so will all faculty members. They're participating in a pilot program with BARBRI, a maker of bar preparation materials. The iPad materials include video lectures, bar practice tests and digital flash cards among other tools.
